2 PhD Positions in Database Systems / Web Data Analytics

The Database and Information Systems chair at the Department of Computer Science (University of Augsburg) focuses on both methodological problems (Data Science) as well as technological challenges (Data Engineering) when managing and analyzing datasets of massive scale and/or complex structure (Big Data).

Activities and responsibilities

The Database and Information Systems Group of the University of Augsburg/Germany
is pleased to offer
two  fully funded research assistant/PhD student positions
to work on methods and infrastructures for analyzing large-scale evolving data.

Possible directions include
  •  Processing and analysis of temporal data, data streams and evolving graphs
  •  Analysis of social media with a focus on information diffusion and trust
  •  Management of Web-Scale Data

Qualification profile

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or closely related fields (including, but not limited to web science, mathematics, physics, …).  Strong language skills in either English or German are necessary.

Knowledge in the following areas is beneficial:
  • Architectures and Algorithms for data management and data analysis systems
  • Methods for large-scale data analysis
  • Strong programming skill in Java, Python and/or C++


The duration is initially one year and can be extended up to six years, according to the regulations of Germany’s scientific labour law.  Research assistants should pursue their research interests with the goal of successfully defending a PhD thesis.

 The (competitive) salary follows the guidelines of the German public sector (E13, full position). This position can be varied as part-time employment, provided that job sharing ensures the full-time performance of the tasks.
