7 PhD Positions in Interdisciplinary Computational Studies

M3ODEL is a multidisciplinary research center that brings together researchers from natural sciences with researchers from numerical mathematics and computer science to tackle some of the outstanding challenges through integrating multiscale modeling with data-driven approaches.
The Johannes Gutenberg University has a nationally and internationally visible research profile, with particular strengths in the natural sciences and medicine. Disciplines in which especially outstanding results have been achieved include the particle and hadron physics with the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter), the materials science, the translational medicine, and the top-level and high-potential research areas funded through the Research Initiative of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. All these are evidence of the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of the work being undertaken at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

Activities and responsibilities

We invite applications from outstanding candidates to work on 12 possible joint projects, starting in April 2020 (Summer Semester). We look for motivated applicants from the fields of
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Biology
  • Computer Sciences and Informatics
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Geosciences
  • Numerical Mathematics
interested in bringing together experimental and observational data with numerical models in interdisciplinary teams. In order to ensure a truly collaborative environment, two or more principal investigators from different disciplines will supervise each candidate. Applicants are encouraged to choose and prioritize up to two research projects posted in our website.

Qualification profile

We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated candidates with good communication skills to join our research teams. Candidates must
  • hold a Master degree, or approach its completion, in one of the relevant disciplines;
  • have strong skills in numerical modeling;
  • be highly motivated and willing to work in international teams;
  • have excellent written and spoken English skills.

We offer

M3ODEL offers the chance of working in truly interdisciplinary teams, using interdisciplinary skills to create and use new, well-conceived computer simulations in various applications in mathematics, physical and natural sciences.
The salary level E13 refers to the German federal public service scale (TV-L). Each position is for 50% and is initially limited to three years.
