The University of Luxembourg has the following vacancy in the Computer Science and Communications Research Unit (CSC).

The CSC is a dynamic and competitive research unit of the University of Luxembourg focused on domains of Advanced Software Systems, Communicative Systems, Intelligent and Adaptive Systems, Information Security. Research projects of CSC are performed in close collaboration with two Interdisciplinary Centers of the University – SnT and LCSB.
Junior Researcher / Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in Security and Privacy in Network Communication (m/f)

Your Role We seek a highly skilled doctoral student to work on a PhD thesis in the domain of computer science with strong focus on security and privacy in distributed systems, network communication, vehicular networks.
Traditional secure communications systems still leak information about the routing of messages in the network (who is talking to whom, time and volume of data transmitted, chat initiation and replies, on-line presence) that may be used by adversaries to gain intelligence. Making use of this information, called traffic analysis, has been known and practiced for many years by military and intelligence agencies. Now it is also a common tool for hackers, trying to probe networks to discover their topology and vulnerabilities, as well as fraudsters that attempt to extract personal data to trick individuals or perform identity theft.
Your goal will be to analyze the susceptibility of existing privacy-preserving routing protocols with respect to traffic analysis and to design and analyze appropriate countermeasures to hamper this analysis or even to render it impossible. This has to be done taking into account quality-of-service, scalability, as well as legal requirements.

You will also assist the professor in his teaching activities (on topics related to your PhD thesis), one to three hours per week and contribute to tutoring students.

Your Profile
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Bioinformatics or related disciplines
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (C++, Java, etc.) and scripting language (Perl, Python, etc).
  • Basic Linux/Unix skills.
  • Knowledge of data mining, machine learning, statistics and results visualization concepts is of advantage.
  • Excellent working knowledge of English, German and/or French is of advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills.
