The DFG Research-Training Group GRK 1505/2 „Analysis and simulation of electric interactions between implants and biosystems (welisa)“ is an interdisciplinary consortium of the University of Rostock's Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering together with the same University's Faculty of Natural Science and the University Medicine in Rostock. http://www.welisa.uni-rostock.de. We seek to fill an Open PhD Student Position on:
„Numerical simulation of bone growth on metallic implants“
(50% EG 13 TV-L for two years, with a possible prolongation for a third year; targeted start date: 01.10.2014)

The project aims at a better understanding of the mechanisms of bone growth on metallic implants. For this purpose, in particular existent mechanobiological and electrostatic models of the interaction between implant surfaces and bone precursor cells shall be examined and extended. Mainly, the Finite Element Method will be used.
An experimental validation can be done in close collaboration with the doctoral students in cell biology.

Expected appointment requirements:
  • The preferred candidate should have a Master (Diploma, State Exam or comparable degree) in Electrical Engineering, Computational Engineering, Physics or (Bio-)Mathematics
  • Program skills in MATLAB, PYTHON or C/C++
  • Knowledge about numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially Finite Element Method (FEM)
  • Experience with FEM-software preferred                 
  • Interest in interdisciplinary work in the areas electrical engineering, biology and medicine
  • A good command of the English language in oral and written form
