Master Student Internship in Investigating the influence of land-atmosphere coupling and stomatal control on water vapour and trace gas fluxes

Description 

The exchange of water vapour and trace gases between biosphere and atmosphere occurs through turbulent transport (mixing) of these air constituents towards and away from the surface. Plants exert a major control on this exchange as the uptake of CO2 and the simultaneous release of water vapour through plant stomata (transpiration) is accompanied by uptake or emission of atmospheric trace gases, such as e.g. ozone. Evaporative water losses and the simultaneous exchange of trace gases with ecosystems are strongly determined by vegetation through the dynamic control of the surface (stomata) conductance. Meteorological conditions such as rainfall, solar radiation and vapour pressure deficit strongly influence this conductance by modulating soil moisture and atmospheric demand for water vapour. This internship aims to explore the interaction of evapotranspiration and trace gas fluxes based on existing data sets (Eddy Covariance) using modelling approaches. In this context, the influence of land-atmosphere coupling and stomatal control on the interaction between evapotranspiration and trace gas fluxes (preferably ozone deposition) will be investigated.

Qualification profile

Education
  • Background in Environmental Sciences, education in Micrometeorology, Hydroclimatology or Biometeorology
Competencies
  • Programming skills (Matlab or R)
  • Data processing
  • Knowledge about environmental/ecosystem modelling and measurement techniques, basic statistics
Language
  • English is required (spoken and written)
