Postdoc position within the ESA Data User Element Project “GlobBiomass"
 
The Department for Earth Observation of the Friedrich-Schiller-University (FSU) and the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena are searching for a Postdoc candidate to support the scientific tasks of the ESA Data User Element project “GlobBiomass” (http://globbiomass.org). GlobBiomass intends to better characterize the distribution and changes in global above-ground biomass and aims to reduce uncertainties in calculations of carbon stocks and fluxes in the terrestrial biosphere. The objective is to improve and combine existing regional and global estimates using today’s available Earth observation and in-situ data combined with models to reduce the overall error margin.

Forests cover roughly one third of the land surface, store a significant fraction of the terrestrial carbon stocks and play a key role in the exchange of water, energy and carbon between the atmosphere and the land biosphere. Satellite remote sensing as well as new and upcoming retrievals of forest biomass on a global scale provide unique opportunities to study the links between forest structure and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. One significant challenge resides in exploring and connecting different observational data streams to identify the links between carbon stocks and fluxes (e.g. climate, LAI, FAPAR) from the regional to the global scale (http://globbiomass.org/). The GlobBiomass Postdoc will contribute to the project with an ecosystem-oriented perspective on the development, evaluation and show-case applications of the global biomass products according to the statement-of-work. The research emphasis is put on (1) the joint exploration of information contained in forest and ecological data sets as well as multisource remote sensing time series in order to (2) detect and quantify the key links between forest biomass (changes) and the carbon cycle with appropriate diagnostics. The methods to achieve the above goals are to be developed by the successful applicant at the FSU and MPI-BGC, and in close collaboration with the respective project participants.
 
We are looking for a highly-motivated and collaborative Postdoc with a PhD in natural sciences and strong background in remote sensing, terrestrial ecosystem modelling and/or data analysis  (e.g. geosciences, ecology, geoecology, geoinformatics, forest or environmental sciences, Earth system science, applied mathematics, or a similar discipline). We are looking for a candidate with experience in exploring and linking multisource data streams (remote sensing, forest or environmental), experience with forestry and/or ecosystem modelling, and interests in terrestrial ecology and global change research. We seek for candidates with distinct analytical skills, a demonstrated ability to independently conduct and publish research and with excellent written and oral communication skills. We value communication and interpersonal skills as required for working in a multidisciplinary research team and for taking responsibility of project coordination tasks.
 
This is a joint position between the GlobBiomass coordination office at the Department for Earth Observation, Friedrich-Schiller-University (http://www.eo.uni-jena.de/) and the Model Data Integration Group of the Biogeochemical Integration Department at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (https://www.bgc-jena.mpg.de/bgi/) in Jena, Germany. The position starts on October 1st, 2015 and ends on 31st of December of 2017, with an employment for 9 months through FSU and 18 months through MPI-BGC. Follow-up appointments are not excluded. This will be a full-time position. The remuneration is based on the regulation of the collective agreement for the public service of the German states (TV-L, FSU) in accordance to the personal requirements up to Salary Scale E13 and according to the TVöD Bund (MPI-BGC).
