The Working Group on Sedimentary Geology at Department of Geology and Palaeontology, Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster, Germany, invites applications for a 3 year

PhD position in provenance research

to start on June 1 or July 1, 2016.

Rift systems at continental margins: A case study of facies and provenance of
the sedimentary-volcanic Mitu Group (Permotriassic; Central Andes, Peru)

The successful candidate will perform a combined facies and provenance analysis of Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic rifting related alluvial and partly volcaniclastic successions of the Mitu Group in southern Peru. The case study investigates the temporal and spatial arrangement of depositional events in the basin as well as the variable inputs from different source areas; it will elucidate the platetectonic development and significance of this basin at Gondwana’s southwestern margin. Finally, the data will constrain the influence of structures and sedimentary fill of the Mitu basin on subsequent mountain building of the Andean chain.

The analysis will be based on extensive field work and laboratory methods focussing on U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircon and rutile by Laser Ablation ICP-MS, and Ar-Ar geochronology of hornblende and mica. This will be combined with single grain geochemical analysis of heavy minerals by electron microprobe. The analytical work will be performed in cooperation with the Mineralogy Department at Muenster University and the ArgonLab at Freiberg University, both in Germany.

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for 3 years. The salary is based on a German TV-L E13 (75%) (civil service) equivalent.

Applicants should have a Master's Degree or equivalent in Earth Sciences, and experience in provenance research encompassing the sedimentology, petrography and geochemistry of clastic sedimentary rocks and their constitutive detrital grains.

Field work will take place in Peru, the ability to communicate in Spanish is welcome. The project will be realized in cooperation with an international consortium of scientists, a good working knowledge of English is therefore required.

The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. We also welcome applications from candidates with severe disabilities. Disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications will be preferentially considered.

Applications should be submitted online before April 15, 2016 to hbahlburg@uni-muenster.de. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interest, and the names and addresses of two academic referies.
