Faculty of Environmental Sciences
At the Department of Geosciences, Institute of Planetary Geodesy, the Chair of Geodetic Earth System Research is looking for a
Research Fellow / PhD Position
(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
for the Topic Ocean and ice mass changes and glacial isostatic adjumstment from the combination of geodetic space techniques with an envisaged start at 1st November 2016. The position entails 75% of the fulltime weekly hours and is limited until 31.10.2019. The period of employment is governed by Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD). The work is part of a cooperative project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the framework of the priority research programme “Regional Sea Level Change and Society”. The project aims at the joint analysis of satellite geodetic techniques to consistently determine ocean mass change, ice sheet mass change, and glacial isostatic adjustment of the solid Earth and thereby improve the reliability and accuracy of global and regional ocean mass changes and sea level change assessments.
Tasks: The work will concentrate on the combined analysis of results from space geodetic techniques (in particular of satellite gravimetry by the GRACE mission and of satellite altimetry over ice sheets) and results from geophysical/glaciological modeling. The related theory and methods will be developed, practically implemented, investigated in simulation environments and applied to real data. The stochastic treatment of measurement errors and modeling errors is essential. The work and its results will be coordinated in the cooperation project and published in scientific journals.
Requirements: university degree (master or diploma) in geodesy or a related subject (like geophysics, physics, mathematics); very good analytical skills; programming experience; commitment to acting in an interdisciplinary and international context. Additional assets are: experience with the analysis of satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry and further space geodetic techniques; experience with methods of parameter estimation, inversion, and stochastic modeling; experience with investigations on ice sheet mass balance, glacial isostatic adjustment, or sea level change.
We offer the collaboration in an inspiring university research group with expertise in geodetic techniques like GNSS, satellite altimetry and gravimetry, oriented towards Earth system research with a focus on polar regions and with the involvement of fieldwork; a family-friendly work environment. TU Dresden is one of the eleven German Universities of Excellence and offers a top research environment embedded in an exceptional cultural and natural environment.
