ZALF is offering in the working group Microbial Biogeochemistry of the Research Area Landscape Functioning as soon as possible a part time position (65%) at our location in Müncheberg as
a Doctoral Researcher or Scientist (36 months) (M/W/D)

The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to scientifically explain causal relationships in agricultural landscapes and to provide society with a knowledge base for the sustainable use of agricultural landscapes through excellent research. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

The WG Microbial Biogeochemistry resolves the impact of microbiomes on biogeochemical cycles of terrestrial and agricultural ecosystems, and focusses on its dynamics regarding trace gas fluxes and interactions with crops. The WG collaborates routinely with Humboldt University Berlin and further research institutions in Berlin and Potsdam.

Activities and responsibilities

  • Application of molecular methods (qPCR; Metagenomics and –transcriptomics; Bioinformatics)
  • Use of multivariate statistics & application of geo statistics within a network of ZALF Research Groups
  • Project related field and lab work, incl. management and coordination of field experiments
  • Writing of scientific publications in English
  • Presentation of results on national & international conference

Qualification profile

  • Degree or a soon degree as a Master of Science in a microbiological, plant, agricultural o. geoscience study program
  • Excellent communication skills (incl. English)
  • A large interest in science
  • A high capability in self-management
  • Very good teaming skills
  • Willingness to travel in Germany and abroad, and to learn new methods
  • Driving license
Advantageous
  • Practical experiences with qPCR, Bioanalyzer, DNA/RNA extraction from soil and plants with subsequent fingerprinting techniques (TRFLP) and sequencing,, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, multivariate and  geo statistics
  • Knowledge in editing metagenome data with bioinformatics
  • Practical experiences with the cultivation of microorganisms
