The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) conducts research to improve our understanding of biogeochemical and hydrological processes in terrestrial systems. Specific studies focus on environmental controls on biogeochemical cycling of elements, the analysis of exchange processes and nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. A combination of experiments, modelling and innovative observation technologies is used to bridge the gap between model, process and management scale. Its research contributes to the sustainable and resource-conserving use of soils and water and to the quantification of the effect of climate and land use change on terrestrial ecosystems. The BMBF funded OrganoRice project aims to support the production of organically produced rice in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Therefore, an interdisciplinary team analyses the current state of the economic, social, and environmental conditions, monitors changes during the transition from conventional to organic rice production and will provide recommendation for future planning.

Activities and responsibilities

Your Job:
The successful candidate will analyze the current land use in the Mekong Delta by utilizing data obtained by the Copernicus program, in particular the Sentinel-1 SAR system. This includes also the estimation of biomass and growing stages of rice. As the general water movement from field to field is an important planning information to exclude routes for contaminants affecting the organic rice production, general flow pathways will be determined by remote sensing. An ensemble-based spatial land use optimization will identify scenarios about organic farming extension opportunities.
Your tasks in detail:
  • survey of spatio-temporal cropping patterns in agricultural cultivation in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam by remote sensing, preferably by SAR systems (e.g. Sentinel-1)
  • workflow development to estimate the crop status (biomass, growing stages) by using the Copernicus program
  • remotely measure and conceptually simulate irrigation water pathways
  • spatial land use optimization in the Mekong Delta to identify areas for extending the organic rice production
  • contribute to an international research team, publish in international journals and present results at international conferences

Qualification profile

Your Profile:
  • university degree (Master or Diploma) in either remote sensing, geosciences, computer science, physics, civil engineering or applied mathematics
  • knowledge in the areas of remote sensing, hydrology, soil sciences
  • demonstrated programming skills
  • experience in cloud computing platforms (e.g. Google Earth Engine) is an advantage
  • ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team across institutes
  • very good communication and organizational skills
  • very good command of the English language
  • willingness to travel to Vietnam and to perform field work
