internship (mapping)

Fundacion San Ignacio del Huinay  Huinay (Puerto Montt)
Huinay Scientific Field Station
Knowledge on organisms and ecological functioning of the fjord ecosystems is very poor in Chilean Patagonia especially in the marine environment. The goal of the station is-besides carrying out some own projects- to attract national and international projects which help to fill the existing gaps.

rrestrial and marine base-line research but main focus is on the marine environment and counseling for the establishment of a network of marine protected areas.

One of our ongoing projects is studying a sei whale mortality that happened in March 2015 in Golfo de Penas, Central Patagonia. We are planning a second expedition to this area to understand what happened.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR: an intern in charge of seafloor mapping for a 5-week EXPEDITION ON A SAILING BOAT (Northanger) TO THE GOLFO DE PENAS from end of JANUARY TO EARLY MARCH 2016
The intern would be in charge of mapping depth, creating a map using Navionics (be GIS experienced), have experience with Ecosounder images and interpretations, and ecosounder image processing. He should also help with any work that needs to be done on the boat (taking CTD transects, mapping whale bones,..).
The crew consists of: two to three main crew members, one student in charge of sampling the whale carcasses, one taphonomy student in charge of marking the carcasses, one oceanography student in charge of taking CTD transects, one intern in charge of  mapping depth etc.

You will travel on the famous NAVIMAG fiords route from Puerto MOntt to Puerto Eden, a small indigenous village where you will enter the sailing boat.

During the 4 weeks on the boat, we are working intensely to get as much done as possible since the trip is very expensive, and the area very isolated.

We will need 2 days in each direction to travel with the NAVIMAG from Puerto Montt to Puerto Eden (and back) where the expedition starts and ends. The spectacular trip which is mainly done for tourists is free for us. Then we will pass 4 weeks on a beautiful sailing vessel. Thus we need easy going and enthusiastic people, who dont get sea sick easily and bring good mood.

Looking forward to applications including your CV and a letter of interest. You will get to areas of spectacular beauty where no or few scientists have been before.
