Optimization of algorithms for model-based inverse planning for use in oncology treatment planning In this role, you have the opportunity to obtain your Doctoral degree by carrying out industrial research, enlarging relevant knowledge and bringing-in new knowledge regarding minimally-invasive cancer therapies. ElectroPros is an interdisciplinary training and research project that brings together insights of different disciplines to enable the development of Electroporation-based therapies to the leading method for deep-seated tumors in cancer care. With a focus on liver cancer, the project will collectively establish novel insights on the biophysical effects of electric fields on tissue, so called Electroporation (EP), important to understand the treatment effect, and integrate this knowledge in optimal device (needle) design and multi-physics models for treatment outcome prediction and inverse planning algorithms. Furthermore, the developed assets will be integrated in clinical prototype software to support and optimize the clinical workflow. ElectroPros is a very interdisciplinary project: EP is an biological effect (nanopores in the cell membrane), used in medicine (minimally-invasive tumor therapies) and based on typical characteristics from engineers (electric field density, frequency, pulse width, current, high voltage, material parameters, construction). The various sub-projects are assigned to all disciplines (e.g. computer simulations, cell studies, in vivo studies, CAD design, programming, prototyping). By the realization of the objectives of ElectroPros a major step will be taken towards unlocking the potential of this promising minimally-invasive cancer treatment procedure. This post is part of an EU Marie Curie training network (EID), with Philips Research and University Hospital RWTH Aachen as partners. You will be enrolled in a 3-year doctoral program at RWTH Aachen University and you will work on both sides, at the university and at the industry partner.

This position is based at Philips Research Eindhoven, The Netherlands with a secondment to UniKlinik RWTH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany. Before applying please read the Marie Curie Fellowship conditions below:

The Marie Curie Fellowship is directed at European organizations in need of developing new areas of competence. It is only available to researchers who wish to work internationally on a rotating basis. The following criteria apply:
  • At the time of recruitment by the host organization, the applicants must be in the first four years of their research careers (full-time equivalent) and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
  • At the time of appointment, the applicant may not have resided or carried out her/his main activity in the country of the hosting partner (Germany) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to her/his appointment.
  • Please be aware that for this position autonomous traveling is involved! Working at the following two locations is required: Philips Research, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and at University Hospital RWTH Aachen, Germany. You will be working at least 18 months at Philips Research, Eindhoven, and up to 18 months at University Hospital RWTH Aachen. This will be supported by a mobility allowance.
     
You are responsible for Optimization of algorithms for model-based inverse planning for use in oncology treatment planning. You will work in a team with three more doctoral candidates on your own individual project. Key research objectives:
  • The development of optimization algorithms for treatment plan suggestion for electroporation in oncology
  • The usage of model-order reduction techniques for algorithm efficiency
  • Optimization of numerical solvers enabling fast computation times
  • Validating models against available test results
  • The integration of algorithms in prototype environment

A research cooperation with the Institute of Applied Medical Engineering (AME) exists for EP-based therapies, including engineering, simulation and in vivo studies. AME will also upgrade this position with a Ph.D. softskills development program.

Activities and responsibilities

Optimization of algorithms for model-based inverse planning for use in oncology treatment planning. You will work in a team with three more doctoral candidates on your own individual project.Key research objectives:
  • The development of optimization algorithms for treatment plan suggestion for electroporation in oncology
  • The usage of model-order reduction techniques for algorithm efficiency

Qualification profile

  • You have a M.Sc. degree in physics, (applied) mathematics, (computational) biophysics, or related discipline;
  • You have knowledge of numerical solvers, FEM modelling techniques, (bio)physics modelling;
  • Knowledge of C++ is a plus;
  • You are ambitious to create a breakthrough in understanding focal therapy for liver cancer treatment;
  • You are ambitious to create new applications for electroporation therapy in cancer care;
  • You are enthusiastic about pursuing your research career in a project with an industrial partner;
  • You have experience with carrying out an individual research project in a multidisciplinary and international team is a plus;
  • You are a team player;

Based on the Marie Curie Fellowship, monthly salary will be 3171,90€ + 600€ mobility allowance for traveling between Eindhoven and Aachen. Bringing your family with you will be supported by an additional family allowance (500€ per month).
