Activities and responsibilities

Immune responses are regulated by the microenvironment. In the gut, intestinal epithelial cells are known to affect immune cell behavior. This is especially relevant when epithelial cells undergo malignant transformation, a process that modifies the local environment to promote tumor growth. Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg) are key controllers of immune responses, and their behavior is often altered by tumors. Treg can suppress inflammation in an antigen specific way to prevent autoimmune diseases, but they can also block beneficial immune responses against tumors. You will analyze how tumor-related changes in intestinal epithelial cells affect local Treg. You will use state of the art methods of cellular and molecular biology, such as high end flow cytometry, transcriptional analysis, bioinformatics and microscopy to understand how tumor-related processes modulate the intestinal immune environment to promote tumor growth in mouse and humans.
