PhD position harmonizing scientific and clinical perspectives on tinnitus subtypes and measures

There is no European standard to categorize different tinnitus subtypes. This is desirable as it would help to tailor treatments to individual patients. It would also allow for more targeted recruitment into clinical trials and more reliable synthesis of data from those trials. This project therefore addresses an important gap by contributing to setting a first evidence-based European standard for tinnitus categorization. Using large-scale data acquired by the TINNET network, the main objectives will be to (1) Systematically identify the potential confounds that hinder isolating subtypes that are specific to tinnitus, (2) Define meaningful subtype constructs and develop a position statement proposing a global subtyping framework. A position statement could be informed by a synthesis of existing published evidence, new evidence gathered using innovative data collection methods and expert consensus, (3) Compare classical statistical methods such as cluster analysis, to new data analysis methods such as cognitive profiling via graphical model analysis, and (4)  Develop a protocol for standardized patient assessment and patient profiling.
The project has potential for important impact in the field. We expect a first interdisciplinary synthesis and position statement concerning subtype constructs and recommendations about minimum standards for data collection that would adequately permit tinnitus subtyping. This will contribute to setting a first European standard for the tinnitus categorization.

The work will be carried out at the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (, which is part of the University of Nottingham. The successful applicant will join a large and vibrant research group in Nottingham and will benefit from excellent inter-disciplinary supervisory support that spans hearing science and statistics.
The successful candidate will learn about established methods, including qualitative research with patients, quantitative methodologies based on Delphi survey methods, and statistical methods to identify patterns in large-scale multi-variate data. Two funded secondments will also enable the successful candidate to spend study periods working with the leading UK charity for people with tinnitus (British Tinnitus Association) and at the University of Regensburg, Germany, which manages a large database of clinical measures.
Candidates must be in possession of (or expected to obtain) a first class or upper 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSc/MA, in psychology, statistics/mathematics, or other relevant scientific discipline. Experience of conducting human experimental studies, or working with adults who have hearing problems will be of particular advantage, but not essential. Candidates should also have excellent communication and team-working skills, be self-driven and highly motivated.
Candidates will also be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria.
In particular, at the time of recruitment, candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the (host country) UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.
