A PhD position is open in the Alcazar laboratory “Experimental Pulmonology” at the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany (starting 01.03.2016), to study the molecular mechanisms of normal and abnormal late lung development.  The main objective of the project is to investigate the role of Krueppel-like factors in lung growth, in particular in the formation of alveoli and pulmonary microvessels. A variety of techniques will be applied to address our scientific goal: animal models using transgenic mice, lung function testing, protein and gene analyses, histology and immunhistochemistry, primary cell isolation, cell culture studies, and cell function assays. The research doctorate will have the chance to apply for the “Interdisciplinary Programm of Molecular Medicine” at the Center of Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), a joint Program of the faculty of medicine and the faculty of mathematics and natural sciences. This interdisciplinary program with an excellent international reputation in research and education in the area of "Molecular Medicine" does not only cover both research and complementary skills, but also offers individual mentoring by senior scientists in addition to the principal investigator of the research project.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Working on the research project focused on deciphering the mechanisms of normal and abnormal lung development using unique newborn animal models
  • Discovery of the novel role of Klf4 in lung development and alveolar formation using genetic modified mice
  • Characterization of the pulmonary phenotype, including lung function testing and quantitative morphometric lung analysis, immunhistochemical-immunfluorescence studies
  • Assessment of protein and gene expression/interaction in the lung
  • Determination of the role of Klf4 in primary cells (mice and human) using cell culture studies
  • Working in collaboration with an international team under supervision and leadership of the PI
  • Publishing impactful original research papers
Minimum qualifications:
  • MSc degree in biology, molecular life sciences or a related field
  • A strong interest in lung development and applied biology
  • Candidates with experience in animal handling and with genetic modified mice are preferred
  • Candidates master thesis in molecular biology and lung biology are preferred
  • Previous experience in protein analyses and immunhistochemistry is preferred
  • Candidates should be creative and capable of developing a competitive research project while working in collaboration with postdoc and other team members under the supervision of the team leader
Your salary will be based on TV-L.
