PhD position in human T cell engineering at the Technical University Munich

The new lab “Engineering Immune Cells for Therapy” at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene (MIH) at Technical University Munich is offering a PhD student position (http://www.mikrobio.med.tum.de/Projekt_AG_Schumann).

Activities and responsibilities

Our lab studies transcriptional regulation in human T cells and explores novel CRISPR technologies for T cell engineering for experimental and therapeutic purposes (Schumann & Lin et al. 2015, PNAS; Hultquist & Schumann et al. 2016, Cell Reports; Rupp & Schumann et al. 2017, Scientific Reports). Moving forward we want to apply these CRISPR tools to different human T cell subsets for a better understanding of the phenomenon of “T cell exhaustion”, a non-functional cell state which develops in solid tumors and during chronic viral infections. The PhD project will focus on characterizing different transcription factors in T cell exhaustion using genetic engineering (CRISPR-Cas9), flow cytometry and deep sequencing technologies (RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq).

Qualification profile

We are a young team and looking for a highly motivated student with a strong interest in (human) immunology and genetics. The successful candidate should have completed a master’s degree (or equivalent), be creative and be committed to interdisciplinary research in a collaborative research environment. Previous expertise in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques and flow cytometry are an advantage, but no prerequisite.

We offer

The doctoral candidate will be employed by TUM (65 % TV-L E13) for a total duration of three years (with possible extension) and will be part of TUM graduate school “Experimental Medicine”. TUM is an equal opportunity employer. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same qualifications.

Please include a CV, brief summary of your previous work experience, a short statement of why you chose to apply for this position and contact information of referees.
Enquiries and applications should be made to kathrin.schumann@tum.de.
