PhD candidate - Respiratory Infections

The Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME conducts research in the field of applied life sciences from a molecular level to entire ecosystems. Our interdisciplinary organization and laboratories encompass state-of the-art equipment, GMP facilities and facilities for complex environmental simulations. We engage in a wide spectrum of research and development services in our three divisions: Molecular Biotechnology, Applied Ecology and Bioresources.

Activities and responsibilities

Respiratory viral infections are a major public health burden and can substantially complicate chronic respiratory diseases. Against many respiratory viruses, options for treatment and prophylaxis are limited. In this collaborative project between the department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Nanosciences at the Fraunhofer IME, Frankfurt and the Biomedical Research Laboratory/Department of Respiratory Medicine at University Hospital Frankfurt, we are aiming to develop antiviral formulations for inhalation to prevent respiratory viral infections.
We are currently looking for a highly motivated PhD student in the field of life sciences to join the project. Tasks include in vitro effectivity and toxicity studies; the generation of in vitro reporter systems; as well as the analyses of gene expression, virus replication, epithelial barrier function and uptake mechanisms. PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with the group working on formulation development and other project partners.

Qualification profile

  • A MSc degree or equivalent in Biology, Life Sciences, Immunology or Microbiology
  • Experience in cell culture techniques, experience in work with primary cell cultures and/or viruses is considered an advantage
  • Experience in two or more of the following techniques: real-time PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, in vitro toxicity assays
  • Willingness to integrate into a collaborative research environment, good team work, strong organisational skills, proactive way of working, critical thinking
  • Excellent command of English – both spoken and written

Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
The working time consists of 39 hours per week.
