PhD position: Chemical Biology of Ion Channels

Chemical Biology of Ion Channels (Chembion)

Ausschreibungsnummer 2019_10_27

funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and established at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster. Chembion is a joined project by members of the Medical Faculty and the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medical Chemistry.

13 scientists of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster have teamed up with their complementary expertise to focus on the chemical biology of ion channels. The interdisciplinary research activities are centered on five topics: ligand recognition, subtype specific modulation, molecular imaging, molecular and cellular physiology, integrative (patho)physiology. Our vision of this interdisciplinary project is to solve physiological questions in the field of ion channels with innovative chemical methods, to bring together the molecular world of chemistry/pharmacy with the function-centered world of medicine and to develop the internationalization of our doctoral students.

Activities and responsibilities

1 position for a PhD student

is available either at the Medical Faculty or the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medical Chemistry.

We will provide a structured 3-years cutting-edge PhD training program in and beyond the fields mentioned above. The position is available as of now. The research project will focus on the role of ion channels in lung or pancreatic cancer pathophysiology. Live cell imaging and atomic force microscopy will be the key methods for the project. Albrecht Schwab’s laboratory is also embedded in a European network studying the role of ion transport proteins in pancreatic cancer.

Qualification profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented doctoral student with a degree in natural sciences, pharmacy or medicine. The salary will be at least TV-L 13 (65 %). Excellent command of spoken and written English, communication skills as well as team spirit are essential.
