PhD Project, Control and Mathematics, Control of Cyber-Physical Systems

As the sole technology and natural sciences University in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, the TU Kaiserslautern has acquired an impressive reputation since its foundation in 1970. It has been given top rankings in a number of categories and continues to profit from the direct campus presence of renowned research institutions including the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Fraunhofer Institutes for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) and Industrial Mathematics (ITWM) and the Max-Planck Institute for Software Systems. In the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering, a new department of Mechatronics is established with the focus in the area of control and systems theory. Currently several teaching and research assistant positions are open in one of the Department’s main activities related to cyber-physical systems.

Research Assistant in Control of Cyber-Physical Systems (f/m)
(PhD or Postdoc Researcher)

The central goal of our research consists in developing a theoretical basis for a holistic approach to designing feedback control systems in a cyber-physical domain. Such an interdisciplinary endeavor invokes a conceptual and technical interaction of control, communication and information theories. In our group, we are pursuing this topic by utilizing the theory of hybrid dynamical systems in its algebraic and symbolical formulation. The former design approach leads often to mixed-integer optimization problems, while in the latter case the computation techniques of discrete-event systems theory are relevant.

The post tasks are focused on contributing to system-theoretical foundations of cyber-physical engineering, including but not limited to
- distributed control in embedded wireless network systems,
- interplay of control, communication protocols and coding in embedded systems,
- asynchronous scheduling and control in distributed systems, and
- system-theoretical approaches to security of cyber-physical systems.Complementary practical activities in the Department’s lab (related to Industry 4.0, collaborative robotics and automotive systems) are desirable.

Applicants should have successfully completed university studies or earned a PhD degree in the field of control, mathematics, computer science, physics, or electrical/mechanical and process engineering. They have proven excellent mathematical and abstract reasoning skills. Credits will be given to a possible experience in specific mathematical areas, e.g. optimization, stochastics and dynamical systems. Finally, the candidates should be willing in providing assistance in the relevant Departments teaching programs and carrying out cooperation with national and international partners.

The employment contract is based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD-Bund) and either will initially be time limited. TU Kaiserslautern is committed to increasing the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and especially encourages them to apply. Under same qualifications, preference will be given to disabled candidates (please enclose supporting documents).
