The Chair of Automation and Information Systems is one of the leading institutes for automation and software engineering in automation. We are embedded in the faculty of mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and strongly linked to computer science. We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our motivated and cooperatively working team.

Within the EU project on smart and adaptive interfaces for work environments with changing levels of automation in evolving production system, the research focus lies on the cooperation of human operators with machines and robots to control and supervise basic as well as advanced functions. Human operators interacts with machines and robots by means of user interfaces that are the modern cockpit of any production plant. Such Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) can fulfill various functions, e.g. the definition of production parameters, identification and solution of faults, re-configuration and adaptation, or the execution of trainings for the operator. Thus, modern HMIs are becoming more and more complex. Furthermore, different groups of operators have to interact with the HMI, e.g. young, old, inexperienced, or disabled people. Therefore, the project aims at providing solutions for smart and innovative human-machine interfaces. A special focus thereby lies on adequate teaching and training methods for the different groups of operators. The capabilities of different off-line as well as on-line training methods and interaction concepts shall be explored, e.g. using virtual environment, speech interaction or others.
Therefore, the candidate for the offered position should have a broad knowledge in the field of human interaction, Human Machine Interfaces in automation, and plant visualization. Furthermore, the international project requires strong organizational and intercultural skills.

All candidate should hold a MSc. or Dipl. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or computer science and should have experience in the described field of the project. Experience in interdisciplinary work as well as teaching is appreciated as well as interest in cooperation with other groups, communication skills and good writing skills in English to publish scientific papers. The opportunity to prepare a PhD thesis (Dr.-Ing.) is given.
