Bauhaus Luftfahrt is an interdisciplinary research institution funded by the four aerospace companies Airbus Group, Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft (IABG), Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as grants of the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 50 employees deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.

The Landing gear is crucial part of the aircraft. The landing gear is very important for take-off, landing and taxiing, but in the other flight phases it is not used and therefore only contributes with its weight, which is around 5% of the MTOW (source: Currey, 1988), to the aircraft performance. Furthermore, the landing gear is the largest driver for Direct Maintenance Cost (DMC) on aircraft level. The functionality of a state-of-the-art landing gear has not changed in the last 70 years. For possible improvements of the landing gear it is important to know the effects on aircraft level including DMC as landing gear DMC are about 25% of the total DMC (source: Boeing, 1990).

Objectives and Proceedings:
The objective of the work is to set up several aircraft model within the simulation environment used at Bauhaus Luftfahrt (Pace APD), based on existing models. The aircraft models shall mirror the different types of aircraft, e.g. narrowbody/widebody aircraft and regional jets, such as Airbus A320, Airbus A330 and Embraer 170, to investigate the influence of the landing gear, especially weight, DMC and power requirement on aircraft level.
For the evaluation of DMC a first modeling approach shall be developed as well. With the developed methods trade studies shall be performed to investigate the effects of the different factors (i.e. weight, DMC, power) of the landing gear on aircraft level.

Work Packages:
» Familiarization with landing gear technologies and BHL aircraft design tool Pace APD and BHL cost tool
» Set-up of aircraft models and introduction to landing gear technology and DMC
» Development of DMC method for landing gears and implementation in tool environment
» Conducting of trade studies with aircraft models
» Documentation of results (in English)
