The University of Luxembourg is a multilingual, international research University. It is member of an international consortium of research organisation. Currently a project is being launched dealing with passively driven sea water desalination devices. The University of Luxembourg will work on the following sub- project:
Numerical Model Development and Validation for Membrane Sea Water Desalination
The lack of fresh water supply in the arid zones of the earth becomes an increasingly severe problem. Already today more than one billion people worldwide have limited access to fresh water. In addition many of the countries concerned lacking the required infrastructure for industrial based sea water desalination. A solution that is currently being developed are prototypic solar powered passive sea water membrane desalination modules. Such models operate independently form any external power supply and require a minimum maintenance effort. On the one hand the membrane of the modules provides the retention of salt water. On the other hand it represent the resistance for the vapour flow and limits therefore the fresh water output. In order to optimize the membrane design a program to perform Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis of the heat and mass transport phenomena in membranes has been launched at the University of Luxembourg in cooperation with the Paul Scherrer Institute and ETH Zürich. The program is devoted to derive, implement and test appropriate membrane transport model for CFD codes.
Within this program, the University of Luxembourg has the following vacancy within the Unit Engineering of its Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC).

Doctoral candidate (PhD Student) in Fluid Dynamics (M/F)
  • Fixed- term 14 months initial contract, extendable to 36 months, full-time (40h/week)

  • The successful applicant will be responsible of
  • developing numerical models to describe the diffusion and distillation processes in membranes for different membrane types
  • design, setup and operate an appropriate test rig
  • validation of the numerical models against experimental data
  • implement the models in fluid dynamic calculation tools
  • documenting and reporting progress and validation results
  • Master degree in mechanical-, process engineering, physics or informatics.
  • Experience in Fluid Dynamics
  • Experience in programming (Matlab, C/C++, FORTRAN)
  • Fluent in speaking and writing English
