Engineer, physicist or chemist for PhD position

The University Duisburg-Essen offers at the Campus Duisburg in the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering a PhD position for the project:
 
„Titania-based, phosphorous-functionalized hybrids as photocatalysts
for air purification“ (Salary: 13 TV-L)

Activities and responsibilities

Air pollution is amongst the biggest environmental issues in China, but is becoming increasingly important in Germany as well. Here, the announced international PhD-project between the Process Technology for Electrochemical Functional Materials Group at UDE’s NanoEnergietechnikZentrum (NETZ) led by Prof. Segets and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics (SIC) will make a contribution. Aim of the project is the knowledge-based development of advanced, multifunctional photocatalysts made of TiO2 that can be applied for the degradation of so-called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). At the end of the project funding, we will have developed an optimized SIC-TiO2 catalyst which can be directly used to reduce PM2.5, i.e.  particulate matter below 2.5 μm. Due to our in-depth understanding of i) particulate surface properties, ii) the interaction of particles with different substrates and iii) the finally determined photocatalytic activity, we will establish design rules for highly efficient, surface-modified photocaralysts. The highly interdisciplinary and international research project will be realized in close collaboration with the SIC including joint measurements and research stays with Shanghai.
  • Characterization of hybrid materials prepared by the project partner with respect to their surface properties
  • Planning, realization and evaluation of adsorption texts to investigate the interaction between different photocatalysts and carefully selected model pollutants (“structure-property relationship”)
  • Peparation of tailored hybrods for photocatalysis based on the design rules established within this project

Qualification profile

  • M.Sc. in science or engineering
  • Interest in disperse systems and air cleaning via photocatalysis
  • Ability to conduct independent research, high motivation and reliability
  • Team spirit
  • Interest to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment
