PhD Student: Design and optimization of broad-spectrum pathoblockers targeting CsrA/RsmA regulatory proteins and enzymes involved in biofilm formation

The department/research group DDOP of Prof. Dr. Anna Hirsch in a project headed by Dr. Martin Empting at the Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) in Saarbrücken, Germany is seeking a
Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

Project title:   Design and optimization of broad-spectrum pathoblockers targeting CsrA/RsmA regulatory proteins and enzymes involved in biofilm formation

Activities and responsibilities

Project description:
The research project encompasses areas of organic and medicinal chemistry as well as chemical biology with the aim to discover novel lead compounds for the treatment of severe lung infections. Small molecule hit structures, which have been identified in previous studies, and additional to-be-identified hits shall be optimized towards modulators of macromolecule-macromolecule-interactions involved in pathogenicity modulation. To this end, derivatives will be generated through organic synthesis and then evaluated via biophysical methods (e.g. thermal shift assays, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, and fluorescence polarization assays). Basic know-how in organic chemistry is required, whereas experience in biophysical assays is a plus.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Pharmacy, or a related field within the life sciences
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
