Doctoral Researcher Position (m/f)

at the Institute of Solid State Physics, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, within the field of

"Ion-Nanostructure-Interactions"

as a part of a DFG-project. The effects of ion irradiation on metallic nanoparticles and their interaction with substrate materials are to be identified. Here, the dynamics of the structural changes should to be especially investigated with various high-resolution techniques: electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), electron back scattering (EBSD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and compared with Monte-Carlo simulations. In an intensive collaboration with our chemical partners at U Potsdam, which will be pursuing parallel approaches, we want to separate and determine underlying mechanisms and effects on the nanoparticle-substrate interactions upon energy impact. Surface and interfacial energies / nanoscale forces, different crystallographic orientations, phase diagrams, plastic flow, catalytic reactions, and chemical bonds must be considered, as well as alloy formation and ballistic mixing, in order to gain a complete understanding of the irradiation effects of nanostructures.

Requirements:
  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics or materials science.
  • Readiness and enthusiasm to do experiments and computer simulations.
  • Highly self-motivated and creative personality.
  • Capacity for teamwork.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English.
We offer:
  • A doctoral researcher position as well as generous research funding, for example, including travel allowances
  • Comprehensive mentoring program of hard and soft skills
  • A communicative atmosphere within a scientific network providing top‐level research facilities and training program, including participation in international and national conferences, summer schools, workshops and/or research stays at international partners.
  • The place of work is Jena, Germany, a young and lively university town with dynamic business activities, successful scientific centers of innovation, and a vibrant cultural scene around a university with a rich tradition.
The position is initially limited to 3 years, extensions may by possible. The pay scale follows the wage agreements for public employees of federal German states (TV-L13, 50%). Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.

Applications should be written in English. The application deadline is Sept. 10th 2018. Applications are submitted exclusively via e-mail to: Carsten.ronning@uni-jena.de. For more information on the position, feel free to contact Prof. Carsten Ronning; Further details: www.nano.uni-jena.de

Selected applicants may be invited to a recruitment meeting in Jena, Germany.

About Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena
