PhD Position in Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Physics: The Auger Observatory

The Physics Department at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany) invites applications for a Research Associate (PhD student) to work on the Pierre Auger Observatory.
 
The Department is involved in forefront research in the areas of ultra-high energy cosmic ray physics, neutrino-astronomy, and hot and dense nuclear matter. The successful candidate will join a team of about 15 people working on the Pierre Auger Observatory, the world’s largest cosmic ray observatory, conceived to solve the long-standing puzzle about the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The upgrade AugerPrime foresees to complement each of the 1660 water-Cherenkov Stations with a 4 m2 scintillation detector and with new electronics. The group at Wuppertal is involved in the operation and data analysis and will contribute mostly with photosensors and electronics to AugerPrime. The position commences at the earliest possible date and is remunerated at the salary level E13 TV-L. It calls for 50 percent of the regular weekly work hours (which currently is 39 hours) of work per week.
 
Applicants must hold a qualifying degree in physics at the time of recruitment. The successful candidate should have experience in experimental astroparticle physics or neighboring fields, such as nuclear or particle physics.
 
The initial appointment will be for 1 year to be renewed up to 3 years.
