Activities and responsibilities

Topic: Optimization problems in power grids from methods of statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics
 
Funding of this PhD-position is available for three years, starting in March 2019 or later. The project is part of a larger joint research activity on collective nonlinear dynamics of power grids. Several other universities/ research institutions are involved when the project is finally approved.


 
Your responsibilities:
 
-       analyze optimization problems such as trade-offs between costs and risks (research topic)
-       study the impact of trade on the energy market on the physical grid stability
-       analyze other sources of uncertainty such as heterogeneous consumption, production and inertia.
-       develop or modify algorithms like message passing to the solution of these optimization tasks
-       use master equations or agent based modeling where adequate.

Qualification profile

Your qualifications:
 
-       master or diploma degree, primarily background in theoretical physics (statistical physics and/or nonlinear dynamics)
-       very good programming skills in C, or FORTRAN, or PYTHON
-       strong interest in analytical calculations and in methods from statistical physics
- German language skills are not required. Jacobs University is an international research university.
