Physicist as Head of Research - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Application, Metabolic Imaging, MRI, MRS (m/f/d)

The German Diabetes Center (DDZ), the Leibniz Institute for Diabetes Research at Heinrich Heine University (HHU) in Düsseldorf was funded by the Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The DDZ as an interdisciplinary institute links molecular and cell biological basic research with clinical investigation.
The DDZ aims at developing new approaches for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus and at improving the treatment of its complications. The DDZ is a member of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).

Head of the Research Group
Metabolic Imaging

The DDZ is currently equipped with a research-dedicated 3-T Philips human MRI scanner with MR elastography and multinuclear capability, and an 11.7-T Bruker experimental MR scanner operated on ParaVision® 6. The research group established various clinical and preclinical applications such as assessment of ectopic fat deposition, whole body fat distribution, assessment of phosphocreatine synthesis and glycogen detection and established infrastructure for 1H/13C/31P/19F MRS.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Development of novel MRI and multinuclear MRS methods (H-1, P-31, C-13 and F-19) for metabolism in vivo, and post-acquisition processing.
  • Leading the group being responsible for managing the MR facility development of in vivo MRS and MRI application, operation and maintenance of MR instruments, and training of research fellows in collaboration with research teams at the DDZ.
  • General academic activity - Writing publications and grants

Key requirements:

  • PhD in Physics or a related discipline with experience in nuclear magnetic resonance application and a track record of collaborative research in Medicine/Biochemistry/Physiology.
  • 10 years of job experience, at least 3 years in a leadership position.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English. Basic knowledge in German is a plus.
  • Team player who also can work independently

Further information:

  • The initial contract runs for 2 years with an option of tenure track.
  • The salary is based on qualification and experience according to TV-L in its current version for North Rhine-Westphalia.
