CoQuS open call for PhD Fellowships

Become part of the Vienna Quantum research community - CoQuS!
And join one of the most vibrant places for quantum science in Europe.

The Vienna Doctoral Program on Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS) has been a training center for more than a hundred students the past 10 years. Our 15 different research groups are working at the forefront of the developments in modern quantum science and technology at six different locations in and around Vienna.

CoQuS invites you to become part of a visible community of young scientists with opportunities to do experimental or theoretical research in quantum physics. You will also get to participate in networking events, (inter)national conferences, transferable skills and career development training.

Application deadline: 6 January 2020
Hearings: 17 & 18 February 2020

Activities and responsibilities

Your training and research range from the most fundamental aspects of quantum science to advanced applications of quantum technologies – in both theory and experiment.

We are interested in questions such as
  • How can we understand the structure of Quantum Theory?
  • Why do we encounter classicality?
  • How can we explore the interface between quantum physics and gravity?
  • Which mesoscopic properties emerge from the dynamics of complex quantum systems?
We are advancing the technologies for Quantum networks, Quantum interfaces, Quantum information processing (simulation and computing) and Quantum enhanced application of metrology and sensing.

Qualification profile

Please note that we only accept applications from students who
  • have not yet started their PhD studies OR who are within their first 6 months of PhD studies at the two universities which are affiliated to the CoQuS programme (the University of Vienna and TU Wien).
  • handed in their application before the cut-off date (the application deadline).
  • apply not more than once within their first 6 months of PhD studies.
  • have not applied before.
The number of places in this excellence program is limited. The faculty members will select new students according to their academic excellence, scientific achievements and expected potential for future research.

We seek to increase the percentage of women in physics. The CoQuS faculty therefore explicitly encourages qualified female students to apply.

Both Internal (i.e. candidates from the two universities which are affiliated to the CoQuS program) and external candidates (i.e. candidates from universities which are not affiliated to the CoQuS programme) are referred to the following website containing more detailed information on the CoQuS applications.
